Configuration在英文中有佈局、結構、配置等含意，簡而言之是指事情看上去整體的狀態與格局，Configuration 及Configured僅為名詞與形容詞之分。

不過，在占星學中，這兩個字的使用上還是有著些許的不同。

按定義，Configuration（相位形態）是指星座之間以幾何形態所形成的關係，使星座上的所有事物互相注視或連結；而Configured（星座相位）則是指形成整個星座相位（Aspect）的關係，而不必要形成以度數計算的相位關係。

仔細推敲，這兩者相同的地方或重點是在整個星座宮位制中，各星座之間的連結。不過前者在於整體的形態與配置，而後者則強調星座間單一的相位與連結，無須考慮相位的容許度。

以下引自載克博士所編譯，都勒斯的《占星詩集》，希望讀者能藉由文獻的描述作出更清楚的分辨：

The positions of the stars according to the fixing are at rest, but those according to transit, that is, the ingresses, make configurations to the positions from the beginning: such as triangles, squares, and diameters.

除了確認本命中已經固定的行星位置外，亦須檢視過運的狀況，也就是始入盤對於本命的行星所形成的相位形態：例如三分相，四分相以及對分相。

The malefics on the right squares prove that the corruption will be more powerful; but when benefics come to assist, these configurations provide with wealth, glory, and merriment.

凶星的右旋相位已證明能讓傷害更為嚴峻；但若有吉星前來幫助，這樣的相位形態能提供富裕、榮耀與美德。

The third day of the Moon gives indications on living abroad. For if indeed you find the Moon on the third day with Mars, or Mars in square or diameter to her, or if the Moon at that time falls into a Martial house, and the Moon is configured with Mars, it becomes the cause of living abroad, and more strongly so if Mars is pivotal.

第三天的月亮代表海外生活。若月亮在第三天與火星會合，或與火星形成四分相或對分相，或月亮落在火星的宮位，且月亮與火星形成整星座的相位，這些都可成為移居海外的原因，若火星位於尖軸宮則可能性更大。
