英國劍橋字典對這三個字的解釋為：

– to prevent movement through something

– 堵塞；阻擋；阻礙；

– to be between someone and the thing they are looking at, so that they cannot see

– 擋住視線；

– to prevent a particular activity by making it impossible

– 阻止；妨礙；使不可能

在占星學的應用上，戴克博士定義為：「行星以自己的星體或光線阻礙另一顆行星完成某一連結（connection）。」

這個狀況常見於卜卦占星的應用。卜卦占星中常觀察代表詢問者以及詢問事項的徵象星是否彼此入相位，來確認事情是否產生交集或獲得成功。然而，當運行較為快速的徵象星即將慢速的徵象星形成正相位時，卻被代表第三者或其它事項的行星捷足先登，搶先與慢速的行星形成相位者，就稱為阻礙或禁止。

最常見的卜卦案例就是問感情，假設月亮代表女方當事人，木星代表男方，女方問能否有機會與男方成為伴侶，但卜卦盤中我們看到月亮即將與木星形成正相位前，卻有金星先於月亮與木星形成正相位。此時我們可以說金星代表某個第三者，比代表女方的月亮還要主動積極，搶先一步把男方給搶走了，女方想與男方交往的心願因此受到了阻礙。

此類的經驗也常見於求職、升遷等問題上，就像是即將成功之際卻忽然殺出程咬金，讓當事人恨得牙癢癢。

以下句例則為世運占星的領域，引自戴克博士《世界占星學I》所節錄，金迪（Al-Kindī）的《論氣候與雨量》Letter on Air & Rains，討論如何借由春分盤來判斷當年的天氣。

Look, in the revolution of the year, at the Ascendant and the angles, and the places of the planets, and their transits, and the blocking of their operations, and the projection of their rays according to what they signify in every clime in terms of the essences of animals and vegetation, and the separation of their ways, from the changing of the Sun in the signs, and their natures in the changing of the air in the four seasons (namely spring, summer, autumn, winter), and what the signs signify with their natures.

應觀察春分盤的上升、四尖軸、宮位，以及行星之間的運行，其運行是否受到阻礙，以及光線的投射，再依各自的自然徵象來判斷每個氣象區中所屬的動物與植物的狀態。亦應觀察太陽在四季（即春、夏、秋、冬）轉換星座時，動植物生態的轉變，並依星座的自然徵象來觀測氣候的變化。
