Direction在英文裡為方向之意，延伸到占星學的應用時系指行星前進的方向，同時也衍伸出更複雜的概念，即利用行星的前進而發展出的預測推運方法。

古典占星學中有兩種常用、但現代占星師卻很少使用的向運法，第一為主限向運法，第二為界行向運法。主限向運法的概念源自於天體的主限運動（Primarymotion），它假設天體行進的一天即為一個人的一生，而當我們想要預測某件事物時，例如壽命，我們會將其代表因數視為徵象星[thesignificator]，若允星（promittors）為凶星來到徵象星所在的位置或與其形成凶相位時，命主的生命就可能遭受到威脅，而允星來到徵象星相距的度數就會轉換成生命的年歲。

另一種方法稱為界行向運法或稱界主星配置法（Directions through bonds/terms）。該方法一樣會設定某一徵象星來代表特定的人生事項（最常用的是上升點），而該徵象星來到某個界，或與其它行星（允星）呈現相位時，該界的主星及形成相位的行星就會成為該段時期的時間主星與伴星，來象徵命主在那段期間的生活狀態。但這個方法有異于主限向運法是以天體運行的角度來觀察，而是從星盤的角度來觀察——像是徵象星沿著黃道的逆時針順序被釋放（Released）了，因此它可以經過不同的界的配置（Distributes），或與允星星體會合或形成相位關係。

以下為古代文獻中運用界行向運法的案例，節錄自戴克博士所編譯的《占星詩集》，其內容源自西元一世紀的名家都勒斯。注意到以下星盤的上升是在上方的位置，有別于現代的圓形星盤中，上升位於星盤的正左邊。

I calculate for this native from the degrees of theAscendant, and the direction of itsdegrees in the clime in which the native was born (and it is the fourth clime)…SoI said that the degrees of the Ascendant will connect with the sextile rays ofMars in four years and a fifth and a tenth of a year. And because Venus was inthis bound, she dissolved the fear and tribulation which Mars indicated, and itwill not kill, and this tribulation will pass over him: because whenever therays of the fortunes are found with the rays of the infortunes, then whateverthe infortune indicates, the fortune dissolves it; but if the infortune alonewas casting the rays without the fortunes, then it will not be long before hedies.

接下來使用命主的上升度數計算，將此度數在命主出生時所在的氣候區進行向運（direction）。…因此可論斷上升點將於4年又1/5年又1/10年32，與火星的六分相連結。由於金星在此界上，化解了火星所帶來的困難與恐懼，對命主不會造成致命的傷害，困難也會擦身而過：當吉星與凶星的光線同時存在時，吉星將化解凶星的傷害；但若只有凶星的光線，則命主來日無多。
