Fixing（固定）與Root（根本）的英文字義雖然不同，但指的是某種星盤的不同面相。一方面，Root強調著一張星盤是另一張星盤的基礎；根本盤特別描述了事物所具有的某些獨特之處，而該獨特之處基本上是與生俱來而固定（Fixing）的。例如，本命盤（Nativity）為擇時盤（Election）的根本盤，因此在確定擇時盤時，最好能有本命盤與其對應，並儘量與本命盤的徵象充份調合。

這個概念也作用在其他星盤的比對上，例如本命盤之於太陽回歸盤，甚至卜卦盤。例如太陽回歸盤或卜卦盤出現了結婚的徵象，但若本命盤沒有承諾，那麼結婚的徵像也許只會以其他類似的事項表現出來，例如參加一場重要的婚禮，又或與商業夥伴達成更進一步的合作。同理，許多占星初學者會在重大事故發生後，以發生的時間及地點起一張事件盤（Event）來查看事故為什麼會發生（例如地震、空難等等），但如果沒有根本盤的存在（例如國家或城巿的出生盤，或當年的春分盤等等），那麼事件盤的徵象將會缺乏重點，也無法解釋為什麼有類似星盤結構的區域卻沒有同樣的事故發生。

以下為《占星詩集》提及固定盤及根本盤的例句，說明了以上的道理：

The Moon being in the sign of a malefic at the time of laying down, if that sign happens to contain a benefic at the fixing, announces that the patient will fall severely sick, but he will equally be drawn out from danger eventually. But on the contrary it indicates the worst whenever the Moon at the lying-down chanced to be in the sixth, or twelfth, or eighth, or fourth place, or she was in that sign (according to the fixing), and the place would then be harmed by a malefic.

當月亮在病人躺下的時刻來到凶星的星座，而該星座在固定盤中剛好有吉星在內，則可稱病人雖病得很嚴重，但最終仍能脫離險境。而若月亮在躺下的時刻剛好來到第六、第十二、第八或第四宮，或月亮原本就在這些星座（固定盤中），且這些宮位又被凶星所傷，病人將無藥可救。

And if the year reached the sign in which the Lot was, it indicates marriage—if Saturn is not just as I mentioned, because Saturn will chill it. And sometimes the transit of Saturn indicates marriage if in the roots of the nativity he was in a powerful place and ruled some things of the matter of the Lot, looking at the Lot, especially if Jupiter aided him by aspect, because Jupiter and Venus indicate a good woman.

若該年小限來到結婚點所在之處，命主會結婚——且土星未如上述來注視時，因為土星會使命主變得冷漠。但有時土星的過運仍會帶來婚姻，若命主的根本盤中，土星在有力的宮位，且為代表婚姻的特殊點主星，並註視著點，尤其若同時有木星的相位來幫助時，因為木星和金星代表好的女子。
