按英國劍橋大學辭典，這個字的意思為illegal, bad, or dishonest behaviour, especially by people in positions of power）（[尤指當權者的]貪污、腐敗、墮落與敗壞，整體來說是一種不道德或為害他人的行為。

在占星學的應用中，有時就與行星入陷（Detriment）劃上等號，系指行星處於任何受損害或運作受到阻撓（例如受到焦傷[Combust]）的狀態（如同「敗壞」一樣）。但Detriment也特指行星落在其主管星座（Domicile）對面的星座，例如火星在天秤座為入陷的。

入陷的行星常無法發揮行星正面特質；相反地，它常有崩解、不一致、缺乏自製力、具敵意，甚至道德的敗壞（以社會的眼光來看）的狀況與行為，正如Corruption英文原意所要表達的。

除了以上行星受到損害的條件外，若行星與凶星（malefic）形成合相、四分相或對分相，致使行星的功能受到損害時，古典文獻中也會用Corruption來形容。換句話說，行星無論是在必然尊貴上的入陷或偶然尊貴上的受焦傷、逆行、被焦傷、被凶星刑克等等的處境，都可用Corruption來形容其無法正常運作，甚至對命主或其代表的事項造成傷害的狀況。以下為戴克博士編譯《占星詩集》在應用上的範例︰

若太陽回歸盤的木星來到本命土星所在的宮位，將在該年化解土星的傷害，命主得以獲得資產與幸運。

And if the Moon was under the rays of the Sun, already annihilated by his glow and she is not seen, then there is corruption, but it is beneficial for one wanting a theft or betrayal, or something he keeps to himself, and for every work which is concealed or hidden, and its owner does not want it made public.

若月亮在太陽光束下，即月亮完全被太陽遮蓋而不復見，則月亮是受傷的，但對欲從事竊盜、背叛、秘密、或任何隱藏的、不想被公開的事項是有利的。因此若事主希望從事的事項能保持隱密，可在月亮被太陽的光芒遮蔽之時開始，這樣對他是有利的。

So understand when you consider what I have put down for you of the corruption of the Moon, and do not start anything in it; but if a matter comes which you are not able to put off until the condition of the Moon is suitable, then let Jupiter or Venus be in the Ascendant or in the house of authority.

應充份瞭解月亮受克的條件，此時不可開始任何事項。但若事情無法等到月亮狀態適當時再進行，則應將木星和或金星放置在上升或權威之宮。
