這個英文字有下降、傾斜、拒絕之意，但在占星學的領域中，它更多的指是指天文學的概念，即是赤道坐標系統中的兩個座標資料之一，另一個座標資料是赤經（Right ascension）。赤緯與地球上的緯度（Latitude）相似，是緯度在天球上的投影。位於北赤緯的星座（自牡羊座至處女座）在黃道上向北延伸，而位於南赤緯的星座（自天秤座至雙魚座）向南延伸。

占星的初學者可能會與另一個黃道坐標系統的黃緯混淆，實際上兩種坐標系統所依據的大圈並不相同，前者是赤道（Equator），後者是黃道（Zodiac），而兩者所形成的交點就是大家所熟知的春分點與秋分點。至於赤緯是平行與赤道的緯度，黃緯則是平行與黃道的緯度，而行星所在的位置在不同的坐標系統中自然會產生不同的座標資料。

由於在古代占星學與天文學是同一件事，因此古代占星家也會把行星位於赤緯與黃緯的相對位置列入考慮來進行判斷，以下是《世界占星學I》中馬謝阿拉（Māshā’allāh）以蝕相盤論天氣時的內容︰

“Māshā’allāh said: If you wished to know the variation of the season with respect to the diverse things of the corruptible world, know the signs of the heavy planets (namely, whether they are hot or cold)……In short, know that the heavy planets, if they were in the direction of any of the regions, they will signify dryness and the sterility of the earth; but if they were elongated from it, they will signify a multitude of rains. By ‛nearness’ I want it to be understood that they are in northern signs, and by ‛distance,’ in southern ones.”

「馬謝阿拉說︰若想知道隨著季節的變換以及物質世界中各類事物的狀況，可觀察慢速行星所在的星座（熱性星座還是寒性星座）。……簡而言之，若慢速行星來到某地區，該區域會經歷乾旱；若遠離，則代表多雨。此處的『靠近』是指在北方的星座，『遠離』是指在南方的星座。」

這裡戴克博士解釋到︰「馬謝阿拉可能是指行星若在北赤緯（Northern Declination）的星座，則靠近北半球的適合居住區。南赤緯則離適合居住區較遠。」不過有時古代文獻並不會清楚說明究竟是赤緯還是黃緯，成為後代占星家解讀時的一大考驗。戴克博士編譯的《占星詩集》，有一篇討論月相、龍首、龍尾及其與買賣以及價格的關係就是這樣的例子︰

“The Head is said to be rising, and its Tail falling, and the signs which the scholars call ‛the concealed’ are from Leo to Capricorn (and it is the region of falling), and from Aquarius to Cancer is the region of rising.

So, look: for if the Moon was in the region of rising, increasing in calculation, then one who buys at that time will buy with expensiveness, and an increase over the price it is worth. And if the Moon was in the region of falling, and she is decreasing in calculation, then what he buys at that time he will buy with cheapness, and less than the price it is worth.”

「龍首」被稱為往上揚升的而龍尾則被稱為往下墮落的。另外學者所稱“隱藏”的星座是指從獅子座到摩羯座（也就是黃道上下降的區域），而水瓶座到巨蟹座則為上升的區域。

因此應檢視：若月亮位於上升的區域且運行資料增加，買家將以超出物品本身的價值的昂貴價購買。若月亮位於下降的區域且運行資料減少，此時買家將會以低於物品本身的價值的便宜價購買。」

這個例子中，原文並未清楚指出是黃道還是赤道，因此博士在註腳解釋道︰「希臘名家赫菲斯提歐的《結果》所引用都勒斯的內容中並未提及赤緯而是指黃緯的高低與速度的快慢。因此此處有關月亮交點的內容是正確的，但若說它與赤緯相關的則是錯誤的（至少就都勒斯原始的內容而言）。」另外，戴克博士在《世界占星學》中，針對阿拉伯名家烏瑪·塔巴里（’Umar al-TabarīUmar）對這段的引用也有以下說明︰「塔巴里的說法是不對的，在南赤緯的星座應該是從巨蟹座到射手座末度數，即與魔羯座的交界處，而北赤緯的星座則為魔羯座到雙子座末度數，即與巨蟹座交界處。因此都勒斯應該不是指赤緯的度數」
