Ages of Man的定義如下：

托勒密將人的一生劃分為數段生命歷程，每段時期由不同的時間主星（time lords）主管。

而托勒密在《四書》（Tetrabiblos）中對生命時期有以下論述：

For in the matter of the age-divisions of mankind in general there is one and the same approach, which for likeness and comparison depends upon the order of the seven planets; it begins with the first age of man and with the first sphere from us, that is, the moon’s, and ends with the last of the ages and the outermost of the planetary spheres, which is called that of Saturn. And in truth the accidental qualities of each of the ages are those which are naturally proper to the planet compared with it, and these it will be needful to observe, in order that by this means we may investigate the general questions of the temporal divisions, while we determine particular differences from the special qualities which are discovered in the nativities.

人的一生大抵可用一種方法劃分不同的時期，即依七顆行星的特質與順序來做劃分。人生的第一段時期從出生開始，歸屬於最近的月亮所管轄；最後一段則為人生的尾端，由最遠的土星所管轄。每段生命時期的本質好比七顆行星各自擁有的自然徵象。藉由觀察這些行星，我們可先歸納出每段時期大致的問題，再判斷星盤中所呈現的個人化徵象。
