Finding the truth between the whole sign and quadrant house systems

從整宮與象限宮位制中尋找真我

現代許多人尋求解讀本命星盤，常起因於自我存在感的失落，例如找不到自己的存在價值、不知道自己是誰、覺得難以作自己、否定自己某些特質所以必須隱藏偽裝、為了他人期待而帶著面具生活著，進而懷疑自己···，這些受困的主因，都在於自己真實的樣貌與外在形象不一致，許多人甚至因為過分認同外在認同，已經找不到、認不清自我在哪裡，矛盾衝突由然而生，因此出現找回真正自我的內心微弱呼喚。我從2013年就開始應用古典占星的觀念，將整宮與象限宮位系統建立一個分析架構，幫助許多個案認清前述問題，並據此提供建議方案。

The evolution of the house systems in traditional astrology

古典占星的宮位演變

First, we should recall that the Hellenistic whole sign house system seems to have evolved into the many types of quadrant house systems we use today.[1] As many people know, in whole sign houses the sign rising on the eastern horizon is the Ascendant, and the entirety of the sign is called the first house; following it in order, each successive sign is equivalent to each successive house.

首先，我們先來看看希臘時期的整星座宮位至現代多種象限宮位系統的差異。許多人都熟知，整星座宮位是以東方地平線升起的星座作為上升位置，再以此上升位置的整個星座作為第一宮；隨後各宮即依照黃道順序，以每個星座依序決定每一個宮位。

In quadrant houses, the chart is divided into four quadrants defined by the Ascendant-Descendant and Midheaven-IC axes, which are then each subdivided into three parts and are called the twelve houses. The earliest quadrant systems seem to have been the Porphry and Alchabitius Semi-arc systems.[1] Vettius Valens (2^nd Century AD) describes the Porphry system in Anthology III.2; later on, Rhetorius (5^th or 6^th Century AD) described the Alchabitius system, which involved dividing the equatorial distance between them, and projecting that onto the zodiac. Before Regiomontanus, Alchabitius was the most popular house system in Europe.

象限宮位制是以尖軸所在度數位置（上升點ASC、天頂MC、下降點DSC、以及天底IC（或者Imum Coeli））所形成的四個象限，再切分成三份而成為十二個宮位：因此從天頂至上升這個度數範圍，包含了三個大小不等的區塊，稱為第十、十一、十二宮。從歷史來看，所知最早的象限宮位制為普菲力制（Porphyry）與阿拉－恰比提爾斯制（Alchabitius）。之後，路透瑞斯（Rhetorius，約西元五世紀）建議將此宮位系統，改為從每個象限的赤道距離切分三等分，再投射至黃道上，此宮位制即為後來的阿拉－恰比提爾斯制，在Regiomontanus宮位制尚未出現前，此宮位制曾是歐洲最普及的宮位系統。

Combining whole sign and quadrant house systems

整星座與象限宮位系統的整合

If we use a certain method to combine the meanings of the two types of house systems, it will make our reading clearer, more objective, and more helpful for clients. First, remember that whole signs are used to observe the various life topics of the nativity, and by judging the aspect relationships between these signs and the Ascendant, astrologers decided which houses were good or bad in terms of social value (so signs which do not form aspects with the rising sign, like the twelfth, eighth, and sixth, were not considered good houses). But even when astrologers used quadrant house divisions, they used quadrants to measure how active or passive planets were; we will use them for this purpose only, as I will explain.

如果我們能以整個星座宮位制合併象限宮位制，這樣整合會讓判斷變得更為清楚具體，且對於客戶的幫助會更大。首先，記得整星座是用於描述當事人的人生事項，並且，依照每個星座與上升位置的相位關係，也可判斷這些宮位對人生產生好與壞的意義（所以那些無法跟上升位置形成相位的星座，像第十二、八與六宮，就不是好的宮位）。而象限宮位制僅僅是用來判斷行星的主被動性而已。

Angular houses or divisions represent environments we are familiar with or have control over, so when planets in angular houses are very active and self-motivated, the natives tend to represent these planets to obtain a lot of attention.

始宮宮位或區塊代表的是我們最熟悉、最能控制的環境，所以當行星落在始宮時，會有能力開創、展現自己，這個行星所代表的人或事物能吸引很多的關注力。

The further a planet is from angular houses, the less active it will present itself as. Planets falling in succedent houses tend to collaborate with others to drive themselves forward. Angular and succedent houses also represent open or public activities, which are usually considered mainstream.

當行星與始宮的距離越遠，行星就越不容易行使它的力量，所以落在續宮的行星，就需要借助他人或環境的協助才能發揮力量。始宮與續宮都代表公開的行動，也代表主流世界。

Cadent houses are the furthest from the angular houses: planets falling in cadent houses would be passive and withdrawing, lacking self-motivation and activity. So when planets in the nativity are in cadent houses, the natives usually represent them in a passive way. They tend to be followers, and their activities are hardly noticed or are behind the scenes. They prefer to act privately, and what they usually engage in is not considered mainstream.

果宮對始宮的距離更遠，象徵行星從最有力的位置，落到一個最弱的位置，所以果宮都代表身處異地或是格格不入的環境，難以施展力量，甚至消極退縮、缺乏自我動能，所以在果宮的行星，當事人會以被動的方式去顯現它，就會變成追隨者，躲在幕後很難被注意，喜歡私下不公開的行動，或是在非主流的世界中顯現。

The truth between the mask and reality

自我存在的表象與實相

These traditional values and wisdom are still workable nowadays. I integrate the two systems to find out the causes of multiple psychological scenarios in modern people. Let’s look at two ways of approaching this.

這些古典智慧與思維，到了現代仍然適用，我在此以兩種宮位制的整合，判讀現代人多樣心理現象的可能原因。

1. Importance vs. involvement in the topics of life

1. 人生領域的價值判斷 VS 投入度分配

While whole sign houses show which activities are generally good or bad for the nativity (i.e. their importance), quadrant houses show what level of involvement the native dedicates to these activities. If the two systems overlapped totally, the good-and-bad value systems and the level of involvement would overlap. But they do not in reality; this difference creates a meaningful tool and guidelines for figuring out whether the native involves himself enough in activities which are good for him. To put it differently, because life is limited, we distribute different portions of our time and energy into different activities; however, the distributed portions are not necessarily in accordance with the normal standards of social values. In most people’s charts, these two house systems overlap and differ in ways which illustrate the unique ways in which the native divides his time and life.

當整星座宮位制顯示生命的好壞價值判斷，象限宮位制則顯示我們選擇人生領域的投入程度，若兩種宮位系統完全重疊時，那麼，宮位的＂好壞＂與＂投入度＂就會交疊衍申出一項意義，就是：古典宮位模型提供人生領域的價值與投入程度的準則。因為生命是有限的，人生各種事項投入度就會有輕重不一的分配；但是，這些事項對人生的好壞與否，未必一致於投入度的分配。宮位的吉凶是依照整星座宮位制判斷，投入度則是依照象限宮位制來判斷，多數人易呈現交錯的現象，因此可看出個案人生事項獨特的輕重分配。

2. Individuality vs. social identification

2.自他的相異 VS 社會的認同

This idea has to do with how imperfect human life differs from a higher, Divine order. Plato’s philosophy emphasizes that a Divine order exists in higher planets of reality, and this order is perfect and rational; however, humans are not perfect. In order to approach perfection, humans must imitate this Divine Order as much as possible: in other words, human beings must realize a mission of imitation in order to become perfect.Nevertheless, humans remain as combinations of this Divine world of archetypes and changeable circumstances in normal life. Similarly, Plato argued that when the immortal soul is embodied and identifies with the material world, it encounters all sorts of motions and changes in embodied life, and these are experienced as confusions, changing emotions, and distorted thinking.

柏拉圖的哲學概念認為不完美的人性不同於高等完美的宇宙秩序，他強調天上星辰的存在顯示了宇宙秩序的完美與理性。因為人性的不完美，為了臻於完美，我們要努力模仿學習宇宙秩序，也就是說，人們需要覺察學習而趨近於完美。儘管如此，在平凡的生活中，人類始終橫跨於神聖的本源世界與多變的現實環境之間。同樣地，柏拉圖認為，當永恆不朽的靈魂進入肉體並認同物質世界時，它會在感官生活中遭遇各種波動與變遷，而這些變動在體驗中往往表現為困惑、情緒起伏以及扭曲的思維。

This is relevant to astrology, because once we have the rising sign, the divisions of the whole sign system are based on the zodiac, apart from any other features of the local birthplace, and all of the houses are equivalent to the signs, so it has a kind of universality and simplicity that is like the Divine order. But quadrant houses are more closely connected to local, earthly circumstances, and their divisions are uneven, so they are more like the changeable world of humans. Human life is a combination of both of these factors, so it makes sense to integrate them when appreciating a human being’s complex life, emotional issues, and how we as individuals (the whole signs) come into confusing contact with the social values of the surrounding world (quadrant houses).

這與占星學息息相關。因為一旦確定了上升星座，整宮制的劃分便完全基於黃道十二宮，超脫了出生地的地域特性。在這種體系下，宮位與星座完全等同，具備了一種如同神聖秩序般的普世性與簡潔美。相對而言，象限宮位制則與當地的塵世環境緊密相連，其宮位劃分往往大小不一，因此更像是不斷變遷的人間世界。人類的生活正是這兩種因素的結合；因此，若要理解一個人複雜的生命歷程、情緒議題，以及身為獨立個體（整宮制）如何與周遭世界的社會價值（象限制）產生困惑混亂的磨合時，將這兩者整合綜合考量是非常合理的。

Some psychological scenarios and consultation suggestions

幾種認知現象與諮商建議：

We all say that we need to recognize and accept the truth within, but before learning to accept it we need to know the most suitable models we can follow. I argue that the discrepancy between whole sign and quadrant systems can be a standard for observing internal contradictions or imbalances. For example, when planet of pivot signs falls into cadent quadrant divisions, native may tend to feel lonely or not be accepted by the world. He may hide his own nature unconsciously, and these negative experiences may become “shadows” in his mind. Below are some observations I have gathered from numerous chart-reading experiences, and will show through these real life examples how traditional astrology does have specific and valuable ways of helping the native explore and enhance himself.

在身心靈的世界裡，我們都說要覺知與接納自己的本質，但首要先得知獨特生命最合適的完美模型，才能學會去接受它。從星盤上的整宮制與象限制的差異，成為了內在本質分裂處與不平衡的指標，特別是整宮行星入至果宮處，容易成為潛意識的陰影，或是深感寂寞、自認不受外界接受，無法展現於外的某部分。以下有許多觀察方向，是我個人多年的諮商經驗累積，我也從許多真實個案中證明，以古典占星作為諮商方式，是有方法協助個案探索自我，並進一步作為協助自我修正的指標，確實有實用的價值。

Weak, downgrade

消極弱化、降級

When a planet falls into an adjacent and relatively inactive quadrant division compared to a whole sign house, the planet may show some inactivity and passiveness, or may tend to become weak; having downgrading the presence of the planet. The native is uncomfortable with presenting the planet especially when it is cadent. The native may self-doubt about the ability of the planet, and even expend great effort to hide or to weaken them. For example, if a planet falls into the 1^st whole sign house, but is cadent because it is in the 12^th quadrant division, the planet will show some of the phenomena below:

某宮位的行星落到相鄰且不活躍的區塊中，當事人會有不展現、消極弱化、隱藏此行星特質的現象。當事人會畏懼展現，需花很大力氣去隱藏弱化、否定。舉例來說，如果一顆行星落在整宮制的第 1 宮，但在象限制中，卻因為落在第 12 宮而處於果宮位置，那麼這顆行星將會呈現出以下現象：

• Sun: The native esteems ego and success, but is uncomfortable with being seen. He may reject reputation, but feels ignored at the same time. He may also passively wait for others to offer him leadership.

• 太陽：有很強的自尊心病在乎自己的影響力，卻很害怕高調被關注，因此不太積極獲得成功與名望，同時又覺得自己被忽視，常會在一旁消極等待別人發現他的能力而被動獲得領導權與關注。

• Moon: The native desires to be understood and have a sense of belonging. She is kind and likes to connect with people—but tends to be shy and hides her emotions. She may suffer from showing her feelings and emotions, or is uncomfortable to present her feminine nature.

• 月亮：渴望被理解與獲得歸屬感，具有親和力的天性喜歡接觸人群，但是卻不自在於表露自己的感受，因為怕旁人不習慣自己的情緒化。也會隱藏其女性化的天性。

• Mercury: The native is smart and thoughtful, but tends to hide his thoughts. He may wait for others to invite him to speak instead of doing it spontaneously, or may even be afraid of speaking.

• 水星：聰明且具有想法，卻輕項隱藏自己的看法與聰慧的天性，會等待旁人邀請他，他才會說出真正的看法，或者甚至很怕對眾人演說。

• Venus: The native is beautiful and full of charm, but doesn’t like to dress well deliberately. She may suppress her happy nature easily, and deny or undervalue her own attraction and charm. She may condescend and compromise easily in relationships.

• 金星：是美麗且吸引人的，但刻意不愛打扮，否認自己的吸引力，也會壓抑容易開心尋歡的天性，甚至會在感情關係上以較低的姿態互動，或是隱藏感情關係。

• Mars: The native is brave and full of a sense of justice, often feeling the fire of anger inside, but is uncomfortable at showing temper. When it does breaks out, it will usually become unmanageable.

• 火星：勇敢且充滿正義感，經常會感到內心有熊熊的憤怒火焰，但很怕讓它跑出來，當它表露時常會一發不可收拾，讓旁人覺得這是無名火。

• Jupiter: The native is generous, optimistic and spiritual. But he is reluctant to show his generosity to be taken advantage of by others. He may also be uncomfortable to admit his interest in spiritual growth which others may not value.

• 木星：本質是正向樂觀且喜歡追求精神成長，卻怕讓人覺得自己日子過太好，或是太慷慨付出卻不被珍惜，因而收起自己的好與資源，不太自在表露精神成長的傾向。

• Saturn: The native is full of self-doubt and self-denial, but is afraid of showing his passiveness or revealing his unhappy experience. He may be inclined to depression.

• 土星：要求甚高且認真，永遠把最壞的打算先想好，但因為害怕失敗與挫折而放下高標準，或是藏起自己的挫敗與陰影與負面悲觀，鴨子划水地在底下努力著。

In these cases, I suggest that the native has to learn to listen to the voice of planets of pivot sign falling in cadent division; otherwise they will become an inner shadow. He must accept the quality of the planet and learn to turn from secrecy to openness, from passiveness to activity. If the native cannot understand himself, he may unconsciously reject other people with similar qualities; which in fact reflects his own self-denial.

諮商建議：學習聽見果宮的行星，其實是藏在內心的信念聲音。接納果宮行星，從私下不公開的行為與活動，轉為積極顯露、主動出擊。當事人若無法真實瞭解自己，甚至會無意識地否定有相似特質的人，其實反映了內心對自我否定。

Upgrade and taking over others’ businesses

過度越位：

When a planet falls into an adjacent and relatively active quadrant division compared to a whole sign house, the planet will be over-emphasized and the native may upgrade the presence of the planet, then become overinvolved or take over someone’s business. He will feel like  playing a role in which he shouldn’t be involved that much. Again, if a planet is in the 2^nd whole sign house but is within the 1^st-house quadrant division, it will be much more active, and show some of the following:[1]

當某宮位的行星落在相鄰且更活躍的位置，此行星的特性會被過度強調，甚至越位表現。舉例來說，如果在整宮二宮內的行星到象限一宮的位置，他會變得過度主動，各個行星的表現如下：

• Sun: The native feels like he has to play the role of leader to show his authority while the actual leader hasn’t made orders yet. He may give the impression of leader or important person of highly position.
• 太陽：會給人有種有身份成功人士的印象，當真正的主管或老闆不在其位時，常必須得去扮演主導者的角色。

• Moon: The native feels she has to play the role of mother to connect and take care of others while mother is absent or hasn’t responded yet. She may give the impression of emotional, feminine, and protective mother-like person.

• 月亮：會給人有種情緒化、女性化有安全感的印象，當真正的母親缺席時，常要去扮演關心照顧其他人的角色。

• Mercury: The native feels like he has to say something more while others keep silent. He may give the impression of speaking loudly, showing off what he has learned.

• 水星：會給人有種愛說話、聒噪、很愛賣弄學識的印象，常會覺得大家都不講話時，他就得要出來說話來破冰。

• Venus: The native feels like she has to play the role of sweetheart. She would look friendly, adorable, or dressed up, but is inauthentic.

• 金星：會給人有種很可愛甜美、打扮時尚、討人喜歡、但常會覺得自己就是要扮演討人歡心的角色，因此有種假假的感覺。

• Mars: The native feels like he has to play the role of fighter while others are not ready to fight. He may give the impression of being easily angered to deter others.

• 火星：會給人有種很兇悍的感覺，常會覺得當大家都恨怯懦時，自己得要率先出來當壞人吵架。

• Jupiter: The native feels likes he has to play the role of wise, generous man while others haven’t shown their optimism yet. He may give the impression of being rich and optimistic.

• 木星：會給人有種很富裕慷慨大方的印象，常會覺得當大家都不正面樂觀時，自己要出來表現正確的價值信仰。

• Saturn: The native feels like he has to raise difficulties and worst-case scenarios while others are not aware yet. He may give the impression of being pessimistic and stupid, tending to keep a distance from others.
• 土星：常會給人有種很悲觀陰鬱有距離的樣子，當大家都沒發現問題與困難時，他覺得要跳出來先說出困難與最壞的情況。

When the presence of planet is upgraded, the native may tend to show the presence too much, and not wait to receive proper reactions from others. I suggest the native should learn to wait for others’ responses before making further moves to adjust it.

諮商建議：當行星的特性會被過度強調表現，當事人常會越位表現行星，卻得不到期望的回應。回到整星座宮位的原本活躍度，等待他人回應才做合適程度的回應。

Control and shift

控制與轉移

In many cases, the reason why the planet falls in a quadrant division which doesn’t match the whole sign house is because native tries to control the real situation or problem shown by the whole sign house. Then, native will shift planet to the phenomenon shown by the quadrant division. On the surface, the planet seems to act under the symbolism that the quadrant division may show, but the underlying reality can be traced to the whole sign house. I will guide the native to identify where the real situation or problem is, and how he shifts to control it to become another phenomenon. I even think that the discrepancy between whole sign and quadrant systems can be the compromise solution between free will and determinism. God places the planets and stars into the whole sign houses according to native’s Divine, but the native tries to control the placements because of free will, and then feels lost himself in the quadrant divisions. In the end, it becomes an illusion of free will made by human being!

在許多情況下，行星之所以落在與整宮制不符的象限中，是因為當事人試圖控制由整宮制所顯現的真實境遇或問題。進而，當事人會將行星轉向至象限制所呈現的表象。外在看來，行星看似在象限制可能呈現的象徵意義下運作，但底層的現實仍可追溯至整宮制。我會引導當事人去識別真實的境遇或問題所在，以及個案如何為了實施控制，而將這股能量轉向為另一種現象。我甚至認為，整宮制與象限宮位制系統之間的差異，可以是自由意志與決定論之間的折衷方案。上帝根據當事人的神聖神性將行星與恆星安置於整宮宮位中，但當事人因為自由意志而試圖控制這些配置，隨後便在象限中迷失了自我。最終，這變成了一場由人類製造出的自由意志幻象！

Self-recognition vs. Self-confusion

認知明白VS 認知不明

If planets fall in a quadrant division which matches the whole sign house, the native will recognize the presence of the planet; but if the whole sign house doesn’t match the quadrant division, the native will have confusions caused by the discrepancy. The native may take quite some time or have to wait for the right time to understand the discrepancy, such as when transits or profections activate the planets. He will try to make the planet go back to the right whole sign house, clarify self-recognition, and return to his natural balance.

行星所在的宮位與區塊一致時，當事人會明確地認知到此行星與所在宮位的關聯；但如果此行星與所在宮位與區塊不一致時，當事人對於行星與此宮位的關聯會有錯誤的認知造成角色定位不平衡，需要時間（或是走到此行運）才能自我釐清。

Case Examples

案例：

Female, Born on 11 Nov. 1985, 10:10 am, Place: Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The recourse: birth certificate. Rodden Rank: AA

星盤A：女性，生於 1985 年 11 月 11 日，上午 10:10，地點：台灣高雄。資料來源：出生證明。羅登等級：AA。

2017年的太陽返照盤

The native is a golf coach. After junior high school she went abroad to train in golf, and had set her goal to be a professional player. But due to some misunderstandings with her golf team, she was edged out and her performance was seriously influenced. She therefore turned her path towards being an amateur player and coach.

當事人為高爾夫球教練，中學即到國外學習高爾夫，本來是往職業選手發展，卻因為受到同儕人際間的誤會與排擠，影響她的表現，只好轉型往教學發展。

Mars is in the 10^th whole sign house of action (Libra), but cadent; he is also the lord of the 11^th, but is in aversion to it (he does not aspect Scorpio). This means that when the misunderstanding occurred in her team (the 11^th) it also influenced her action (represented by Mars in the 10^th). When I pointed out that the cadent Mars would become a shadow of fear following her, she shed tears immediately and told me the story. Because of this fear, she changed her career path and decided not to play competitively thereafter.

火星在整宮第十宮，卻在象限果宮，火星也是第十一宮主星，並且不合意於第十一宮，因此造成她的人際關係出現誤解，影響火星在十宮的運動表現。當我指出她的火星隱藏在果宮，會變成恐懼的陰影時，她立刻哭了，告訴我這段過往傷痕，讓她決心轉型再也不參加比賽。

Venus is in the 11^th whole sign house (Scorpio), and is very active in a quadrant angle. Well, golf courses are often regarded as social venues for important businessmen and celebrities. As a coach, in order to obtain financial aid from the government, she needs to form strong ties with the people in those departments. In fact, she is actually good at handling public relations (the 11^th), and so controlling the resources from these parties is another profession of hers.

金星在象限第十宮，整宮的第十一宮，她的教練工作常要跟政府部門打好關係，才能獲得補助資源，因為高爾夫常是政商名流建立社交關係的場合，所以她的一項專業是：掌握利害關係的公關高手。

Again, Mars is in the 10^th whole sign house of profession and action, but cadent in the 9^th quadrant division. So even though she coaches golf now, her real ambition had been to be a professional player – being a coach is actually a kind of escape. On the other hand, Venus is in the quadrant 10^th but in the whole sign 11^th – she looks like a master in public relations, and it is how she stands on the big stage of society.

火星在象限第九宮，表現上是一位運動教練，實際上火星在整宮第十宮，為了想逃避職業選手而生的轉型之道。金星在象限第十宮，表現上是個公關高手，實際上金星在整宮第十一宮，是為了在複雜社會關係中的生存之道。

Her Mercury is in the 12^th whole sign (Sagittarius), and that is the reason why she encountered communication problems and created enemies (the 12^th). Mercury also has a tight sextile with Mars, and when her firdaria time lord became Mercury, she went back to Taiwan. However, due to the cultural differences she had adopted while away, she was considered too straightforward and was edged out by her teammates. She came to me in 2017 when the Ascendant of her solar return chart was Libra, her natal 10^th house (which meant that professional issues and actions were activated that year). Also, in her solar return Mars came back to his natal place and was still cadent. This consultation provided her with an opportunity to reinvestigate the problem her Mars was hiding behind. I pointed out that the weak Mars showed that she would not be as successful as she wanted to, and she was haunted by fear because she didn’t understand that she would not be as successful. Therefore I helped her adjust her expectations to reality, and she was able to choose a better path, like playing in friendly or exhibition matches.

在12宮的水星代表因為溝通不良而產生暗中敵意，水星與火星有緊密的六合相位，在18歲進入法達水星大運時，她回到台灣，因為個性洋派，也說話太直接而被排擠。她來找我諮商時為2017太陽回歸盤，恰好是上升天秤座，為本命第十宮，火星也在天秤座內的果宮，火星回歸本命的位置，這次諮商讓她有機會重新檢視一直隱藏的火星問題。

The native owns an advertising company. He studied in France, and when he was young he dreamt of being an artist, but then he was called back to Taiwan because his father suddenly went bankrupt.
